The Last Two Ayats of Surah Baqarah: A Shield for Believers

The sacred book of Islam, the Quran, is replete with passages that provide believers courage, consolation, and direction. The final two Ayat (verses) of Surah Baqarah are particularly significant among them. Muslims all around the world recite them because of their profound significance and purported advantages.

The emphasis of the opening verse (2:285) is total faith. It tells of the believers' unwavering faith and the Prophet's (ﷺ) unwavering belief in what was revealed to him. They do not distinguish between Allah (God), His angels, His scriptures, and all of His messengers; they firmly believe in them all. The cornerstone of the Islamic faith is unity and total surrender to Allah's will.

While the entire Qur'an is undoubtedly beneficial, certain verses can have different effects on different people. As we have already discussed, scholars generally agree that the final two verses of Surat Al-Baqarah are particularly virtues, and this is mentioned in a number of prophetic hadiths, such as:

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Abu Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

"The final two verses of Surah al-Baqarah are sufficient for anyone to recite every night." narrated by Muslim (808) and al-Bukhari (5009).

Regarding what is meant by "they will suffice him," the scholars differed in opinion. According to some, it indicates that they will either keep him safe at night or they will replace the qiyam (night prayer) on that particular night. It's possible that both are intended. Allah is the most knowledgeable. If you find it tough to read and understand Arabic, read the online Quran in English.

Some have come to the conclusion that you can stick to the last two surah verses, and as we've already discussed, hadiths were referenced in that. Reciting these verses guarantees a believer's safety and protects them from all kinds of evil powers and eyes.

In summary, it is obviously preferable and more virtue-filled to read Surat Al-Baqarah in its entirety, but if that is not possible, you will still benefit from reading the first two verses.
